The Secret [Raise]

I’m mixing things up today. Question first, story after. I have to know: How many of you guys have Direct Deposit? If you have DD, how often do you check your paystubs?

From the time I got my first job until about 2 years ago, I was pretty much against the direct deposit. Granted, at the time, I thought “they” just sent your check “somewhere” and hoped it “ended up” in your bank “account”. Account definitely needed the quotations for emphasis. Thank you parents for making me Worrywart Wanda! Because of those “live checks,” when I didn’t have time to head to the bank, I would have weeks upon weeks of paychecks just sitting around in my room, chillin’. When I started working at my current company about two years ago, my check, which was physically bigger than the DD stubs, annoyed the heck out of my boss who then inquisitioned me into getting DD. But now that I have it, I honestly don’t know how I ever lived without it.

With the live checks, I would always look for some egregious error. Missing money. Wondering who the ef “FICA” was and why this person got a generous portion of my pay. I wanted to be her. Or him. With DD, you would think I would be extra cautious, but I’m not. I’m pretty reckless actually. I just hop onto online banking and make sure the money is there. And you’d think since I’m Non-Exempt, I’d make sure that I got my OT paid, but nope. I just kind of ballpark some figure that should be there and am pleasantly surprised when its higher. Point is, I don’t really focus on how much makes it into the account. Just that there better be some money in the account on Thursday morning or someone is getting an angry letter.

Anyway, what does this have to do with the title of my post? I pretty much opened a pay stub for the first time since starting this new role in August of 2009, just so that I can check to see how much I was contributing to my newly opened 401K and was BLOWN AWAY by what I saw. I really loved the blue that they chose as the background. KIDDING. Oh, it was depressing to see all of those deductions, but my OT was looking kinda cute in the right hand side. My pre-tax pay was looked mysteriously HIGH for some reason. So, being the nerd I am, I multiplied this amount by 27 (the number of paychecks that we are getting this year) and noticed that the base salary was definitely greater than what I signed on for.

I went from ecstatic to confused to just plain happy in about 3 seconds. I don’t know if any role just doles out raises without notifying their employees, but a raise is a raise is a RAISE. I wanted to go thank my boss, but then I went back to my state of confusion and stayed there for a bit. I mean, wouldn’t I get a review or something? So, I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t just playing Jedi mind tricks on myself (it happens a lot…) To end this roller coaster of a story, the OPERATIVE factor is that there are 27 paychecks this year (thanks to the three-fer), meaning what I thought was a raise was just another paycheck.

How embarrassing would that have been if I went into my boss’ office with tears of gratitude?

Hard Time For Graduates In The Current Job Market

Graduate Job Search

The current job market scene for the fresher or the fresh graduates in India is not incredibly encouraging the way it is in the rest of the world. The situation is the same for both the blue-collared workers as well as for the white-collared ones. The blue-collared workers require upgrading their talent in vocational training. Most of the blue-collared employees are working as the temporary workers and in some unorganized sectors. However, even though there are numerous of them all around those without employment opportunities.

The employment factor, of these employees, also needs to be taken into consideration. Whether or not they meet stringent industry standards? In order to tackle this shortage the government has linked up with various technical and vocational institutes and sectors to upgrade the employees in these skills.

In last few months, the job market scenario at least for white-collared employees was booming. Almost all the student even before they were graduated had an Entry Level job in hands. They had choice to pick and choose the employer they wanted depending on the various factors like the salary, the location, the benefits offered to them, even the growth potential, the sort of training that company offers to them, whether or not they will get any opportunities offsite and certainly the overall job security the job offers them.

Similar was the situation for the experienced hands. If you were not happy with the current work conditions or with your manager all you needed was to do just float your bio-data to a few job consultants and it was easy to have landed yourself with another new job. Most of the companies were in the overhauling mode and they required loads of employees. Levels of attrition were high and none of the students or graduates remained unemployed for much a long time.

However, looking at the recession in US things does not seem to be same any more. Almost all the companies are talking about cutting cost and making each and every penny go a longer way. Otherwise, the better option is to cut down the staff and just keep sufficient people at work. Hence, there is no buffer, or staff waiting in wings and even people waiting on bench. Only the ITES and BPO sectors still need fresh people that also at entry level. So if you have experience in hand there is no chance for you in this sector.

Few months ago the industries those were considered to be rising high are no longer considered as so. Therefore, the sectors like the real estate, insurance, and finance are no longer hiring people at the moment. Similar is the situation of automobile industry. There are very less new buyers and therefore manufacturing has slowed down.

Reduction of expenditure and the pink-slips to the employees are there to stay. Few of the IT firms that gave the joining letters to graduates have even delayed them. And have asked the people to wait till they get any further intimation as the firms are getting new projects and the current staff can easily manage the projects.

The Best Plan for a Uni-Friendly Job

Many jobs don’t gel with university, as I’m sure readers are aware. University demands most of the five day week, and, as if to annoy your further need for cash, has a knack for interspersing itself in little hour to two hour blocks from day to day. Some days you may only have one lecture, but it renders your day completely unworkable. Then there’s the added stress of assignments, study and reading of the materials required for your subjects. Work demands seven hours out of a day, leaving you to have to do all this in the evening. I know for a fact that after a full day’s work, I’m absolutely buggered. All I want to do is laze in front of the television until bed time. Another problem is that work doesn’t allow for personal failings on assignments, those crunch times when you need a day to quickly chalk up an essay, the day before it’s due. And don’t give me that ‘But I never do that, I have a strict work ethic’…because, well, it’s just not true. Everyone’s had one of those. It’s one of the downsides of pursuing an education. So, how can a job fit into all this? Well, I’ve been happily employed all through my university life (I’m beginning second semester soon), indeed have had my job since the last quarter of 2007, year 11 of high school. When I graduated I had to rearrange my working schedule, as the holidays were fast coming to a close, where the bank account received a daily dose of $16. I achieved squeezing a job into my university life by purposefully leaving a day open in my timetable. Take this down: Rule 1: Keep one day free of university (possibly even two if you can) when enrolling in subjects. Now unfortunately this might negate your day of rest that you had planned, but you have to make sacrifices to get the sweet green. In my case it was a Thursday for first semester, then a Wednesday for second. The next useful tip is, if you are looking for something in retail (which I recommend for part-time with uni), is to apply for either Thursday nights or Friday nights, respective of whether the job is suburban or within the CBD. Rule 2: Opt for Thursday/Friday Night Shopping. In a way this is like a second day of pay. Unfortunately a downside to this is after university you’ll dive straight behind a cash register for four or five hours, so essentially you’ll have to be mopped up off of the floor when the night is done. There will definitely be no study that night. And if you have a really early lecture or something the next day, you may want to skip this tip. But if not, it’s more money in your wallet. The next piece of advice I can give is apply also for one day of the weekend. If you seriously are a T-9000 and are capable of going for both days, then good luck to you. Though for most human beings, you’ll need one day’s rest, hell, even God needed a day to break open a six-pack and let his stomach sag out from under his singlet once upon a time (re: Genesis). Another cool perk of many retail jobs (this tip is also just for retail predominantly, as many places don’t work weekends), is that you get double pay on weekends. Cha-ching! Rule 3: See if you can get a day on the weekend too. The last piece of information I’ll give is for the resume. When you’re assembling it, be sure to put your grades of both school subjects and university subjects. If they see good grades, the employers will assume the person is a student, upon which they can pay them less. Or that’s meant to be the thinking. Although most university-goers are adults, so you will most probably receive full pay. But, it throws them off to see school grades, and perhaps the people will take the bait. Also another point, is in regards to when and if you are employed – use your university knowledge! Demonstrate to the workplace that you know stuff. I’m not saying turn into a smartass and try to show people up to be dumb, but just discuss what you’ve learned with your coworkers. These topics make for good water-cooler chat, and gets you admiration and interest. Might even go towards that promotion. Rule 4: Be sure to include your grades on your resume and while in your job demonstrate prowess in your field of study. And those are my tips for juggling a job in between uni-life. Try to get your resume into as many places as possible as well. Really put yourself out there. Good luck.

Do You Trust God? (Part 2)

Farther along we’ll know all about it,
Farther along we’ll understand why;
Cheer up my brother, live in the sunshine,
We’ll understand it all by and by.

In life we run into situations that just don’t seem to make any sense.  We try to look at the situation from multiple angles or we attempt to dissect it from various aspects, but at the end of the day we look up to God, unsure of what else to do because the situation still baffles us.  Anybody else ever experience this?

When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died- John 11: 6, 13-15, 21
We always have to remember that there are two sides to every story, or there are often two parallel conversations occurring.  There is our natural conversation, but as Christians we always have to remember that there is usually a spiritual conversation occurring as well.  Jesus had one conversation with His disciples, that Martha and the others knew nothing about.  However, after some time passed everybody eventually understood why he allowed Lazarus to die.

We cannot judge our situation based on what we see. We cannot even question God on why He allowed or did not allow something to happen.  We always have to remember that God’s plan is bigger than us and He has the ability to see farther down the road than we can.  Do you trust that God knows best, even if your situation is not going the way you want it to go?

Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD. And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life- Job 2:1-6

Here again God knows something that Job does not know.  But Job has to trust God.  Job had to believe that even though I am going through these things, that God knows best and no matter what I do, I better not do anything to dishonor the Lord.
In all this did not Job sin with his lips.- Job 2:10

And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly- Job 1:21-22

Job knew he had to just trust God.  Because if anything was going to change it would be because God changed it.

So, Instead of getting mad and upset at your current situation; trust God. You may not be able to see exactly how everything is going to work out, but if you are patient you will see that God had everything under control.

Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him- John 11:41-45

You never know how trusting God in your situation might help to draw somebody else to Christ.  Trust God it is worth it!

So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses. He had also seven sons and three daughters. And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren. After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, even four generations. So Job died, being old and full of days- Job 42:12-13, 15-17
