Post-Thanksgiving Thoughts

Hello all. I finally have time to update this! I have made quite a bit of food in the last few weeks, but nothing for Thanksgiving, alas. The boy and I drove the 11 hours to Ohio to visit my mom’s family (but no Mom & Dad, unfortunately, they were having Thanksgiving with my other grandparents back home) and had a lovely Thanksgiving Day and a productive (and kind of expensive), but not stressful Black Friday. We drove home on Saturday to avoid the traffic and stopped in Pennsylvania to visit friends and their adorable little boy and have lunch at a great diner that had amazing pie. I had coconut cream and the slice was like a quarter of a pie. Ginormous. I was unable to finish it and felt a little sick afterwards, especially since it was topped with meringue, not whipped cream. Ooof.

Thanksgiving dinner was lovely. Grandma made deliciously moist and fatty turkey with oven-baked stuffing, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, corn, and sweet potato casserole, in addition to her amazing bread-maker bread (sooooo good!), raw cranberry relish, and apple and pumpkin pie. The sweet potato casserole was a revelation. She baked the sweet potatoes, then peeled and mashed them smooth with sugar, egg, and a little spice, then put it in a casserole dish and topped it with brown sugar and chopped walnuts. It was so smooth and sweet, it tasted like pie! I had some with little turkey sandwiches for dinner.

Friday night we had leftovers at my aunt’s house and she made broccoli cheese rice casserole that was also amazing. *nom*

Now that we are home, things are slowing down a little finally. This week is my last week of class and I’m down to 10 hours/week at work. Which kind of sucks, but is kind of nice. I start my consulting work in January (which will be 30 hours a week or so, so it will even out) and class starts again January 20th. I’m only signed up for one class so far, but I think I’m going to try and make my consulting job my internship and maybe take one more class, depending on what my parents’ insurance company says, anyway! The parents have also offered (well, Mom demanded, actually) to help pay for school, which is nice and a big load off my shoulders but also makes me wonder, am I ever going to be able to take care of myself? Lol…

It’s a dark and rainy day today and it’s put me in a contemplative mood. I always get contemplative in late autumn and into winter. It’s nice to slow down and not have the stress of giant papers for school looming overhead. That’s one thing I think our urbanized society is missing that was present in rural and agricultural societies: down time in the winter. All the cold and darkness makes you want to just hole up and sleep late and read and conserve energy and cook and do craft projects. Which, if we were living on a mid-19th century farm, is what we’d be doing! Well, except for the sleeping late part. The animals need feeding, after all!

I didn’t get much time to think about thankfulness during Thanksgiving. I was too busy with school and packing for our trip and getting up at 5:30 am and driving 11 hours in heavy traffic and rain and then doing Christmas shopping and trying to avoid the crowds (which we did ably by going to places like Home Depot, Sears Home & Hardware, Lowe’s, and Bass Pro Shops). But now I have time to think. And here’s what I’m thankful for:

  1. The boy. : ) He’s the love of my life, he makes home a home, and I can’t imagine living without him. Did I mention that he’s funny and interesting and incredibly easy to talk to and get along with? I’m thankful that I’m able to just be with him every day.
  2. A roof over my head and the ability to put food on the table, even if we have to save up for things like bookshelves and other furniture.
  3. Friends and family. Especially family, for taking care of me and paying for things I’m too poor to pay for myself. And friends, old and new, for being awesome and fun.
  4. The opportunity to go to graduate school in a field I love.
  5. Having a job in the field and opportunities to expand my experiential horizons, even if the pay is kind of crappy and there are no benefits.
  6. Fresh food. I love fresh, whole fruits & veggies and am very lucky to live in an area where not only are they readily available, but are also local and often organic and usually pretty cheap.
  7. Good kitchen tools. They are slowly being amassed. I still don’t have enough enameled cast iron, though.
  8. Creativity. It’s the only reason why I can cook.
  9. Books. Cookbooks, fiction, hell, even textbooks. They are lovely. But I have too many of them. Would you like some? Please ask.
  10. Pretty things and things that make me feel pretty.
  11. Self-control. This is the stuff that makes me do my homework, clean (occasionally), and not buy cute shoes and clothes that I not only probably can’t afford, but don’t have room for.
  12. Vintage/antique stuff. Not only can it often be cheaper, it’s usually better quality and prettier than new stuff. Plus, hello? Reuse!
  13. And lastly, Facebook. Yes, Facebook. Because lord knows I never call anyone and it’s my only way to keep in touch (however tenuously) with far-flung friends and family.

There. How’s that for a list? Not too long, not too short. Half serious, half irreverent. Just like me.

And now, my dears, it is that time of the day in which I must start rustling up dinner, putting away washed dishes, and maybe, just maybe, washing the dirty ones before the boy comes home. I hope you all had lovely Thanksgivings. Tomorrow I’m off from work, so I think I will write about my Thanksgiving-inspired food goals/recipe list. Because we all need one. : )

Surviving the Recession Without a Job

Job loss related stress
Millions of people are now experiencing a new reality. The American Dream has become the American nightmare for many, as thousands of jobs are being lost every month. In addition to the jobs that are being lost, many others are now underemployed and have been forced to work for less compensation. While thousands of people are losing their jobs every month, the household expenses still continue grow.  The emotional strain of trying to pay the bills without a job is paralyzing. Once workers lose their job, it continues to be extremely difficult to get back into the workforce. Due to the disappointing labor market, millions of idled workers are on the sidelines waiting for a recovery to dip their toes back into the job market.

Now even though the current state of the economy may be discouraging, we cannot sit back and let negativity overwhelm us. There are still legitimate ways to earn income without being employed. The evolving economy has created a larger demand for a contingent workforce. Contingent workers are typically known as freelancers, independent professionals, independent contractors or consultants. These workers are usually self-employed and typically offer their services in exchange for a fixed rate of pay. There are many ways to get started as an independent contractor. If you would like to make money from home, marketing products online is a very viable option for you. Anyone who would like to make money from home, regardless of experience, can learn how to harness the power of the Internet to sell products online. Each and every year people just like you and I collectively earn billions of dollars online, by selling products for companies who offer performance based compensation.

I encourage you to take control over your income. The ability to work independently and make money from home may be necessary for survival in today’s economy. Here is a resource that has helped a beginner, with no previous experience earn a consistent $59,000.00 per month. It may be able to help you take control of your income and make money from home.Click Here

Top 10 ways a down economy can be your best friend!

Top 10 ways a down economy can be your best friend.

By Richard Spencer, CEO of MyTee Golf Products, LLC

1) Necessity is the mother of invention. Opportunity and innovation often thrive in this environment.

2) Lack of activity gives you time to adjust your marketing plans and define your goals.

3) It establishes a common thread between you and most of your customers. ie., We’re all in this together!

4) It enhances the reception of value added services.

5) You can often negotiate products and services and pay LESS than the going rates.

6) A down economy enhances demand for some products and services naturally. This can make your advertising efforts more effective.

7) Companies may be more willing to give audience to vendors of inexpensive advertising or promotional items.

8) It presents the opportunity for well-funded marketing and advertising companies to acquire talent and/or physical resources.

9) It has spurred the government to initiate helpful programs for individuals and companies willing to seek and leverage their benefits.

10) If you can make it through this you can make it through anything!

Yeah, I'm complaining

So I got a temporary job at a digital media company. We get scanned pages of newspapers and magazines, capture the bits and label them appropriately, proof them, and they turn into epubs.  And I like the actual work, even though the pay is sad and my last paycheck hurt my feelings. But oh my God, it is run so badly.

First of all, this shift I worked tonight (on Thanksgiving) was so dumb, not even 3 hours. What a waste. Second, I watched a girl spend most of the 3 hours on FB and youtube, and when she DID deign to work, she did it wrong. I simply cannot fathom how a company can bleed money on such a bunch of fucking incompetents as they’ve hired. Because first they pay people to not work, and then when the stupids fuck it up, it takes time (and money) for other people to fix it. What a bunch of morons. If they fired the stupid people, they could pay the good ones a tiny bit more. IDIOTS!!!

AND, you know what? I was working from an error report last night and someone had typed in “insert haifin into line 3.” That’s how they spelled “hyphen.” If you can’t even spell a simple word, should you really be responsible for proofing something? I think not.

And the software is jacked up, the process is so wildly inefficient, it just boggles the mind. I can’t help it–when I’m told to proof something, I want it perfect. It’s how I am.

Tonight I kept getting a page in proofer that hadn’t been blocked, though it needed to be (into several articles). The first time I sent it back, I put a comment up saying it had to be blocked. The second time I got it, nothing had been changed. I sent it back again, with the same comment. The THIRD time, I ripped off my headphones and said “Okay guys, I’m sending back this page for the third time, could someone PLEASE block it?”

Inefficiency. I don’t understand how this company makes money or keeps clients. I should just start my own company, get someone like Casey to write me some programs, and steal all their clients. Because I’ve seen the final products and if I was a subscriber, I would ask for my damn money back. It’s laughable.

Why do BAD things happen to GOOD people?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

“Is it good unto Thee that Thou should oppress, that Thou should despise, the work of Thine hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?” – Job 10:3

Do good things come to good people only? And do bad things come to bad people only? If something “bad” happens to you, does it mean you are living in “sin”? Does it mean we deserve what we get in life? What happens when bad things happen to good people? Does it mean they are really not good people to start with?

One of the most impactful books in bible is the book of Job. It tells of Job, a righteous man, a wealthy man. Satan went up to God and placed a bet, that if Job loses his wealth, his family, his health…Job would turn away from God. God “allowed” satan to put Job through the ordeal. Job, however, stood firm in his trust in God and was fully restored by God.

But before his restoration, Job cried out his anguish and despair to God. “Why are You letting these things happen to me? You made me, but now you destroy me. You made me out of clay, will you bring me to the dust again?” Job really let it all out. What made worse his plight, is that his 3 friends condemned Job that all this was a result of his sin, that he deserved all his misfortunes.

Did something bad ever happen to you? You got terribly sick, or you had an accident, or lost a job, or something similar. And instead of comforting you, the first thing your family or your friends tell you is, “hey, you gotta go back to God. You have to live a clean life. You need to do this or do that.” As if its all your fault why it happened in the first place.

Imagine, walking up to the relatives of those mercilessly killed in Maguindanao and telling them, “God has a purpose for this. You have to repent and turn back to God.” How do you think they’ll react? We have to be a little slower in condemning, and a little better in showing people that we care.

Why can’t we just accept that bad things happen to good people. Period. Can God teach us something from the experience? Definitely. But is there a reason why it happened? Probably yes, but we can’t “presume” that there is all the time. We can’t “presume” that this guy is a sinner cause he isn’t active in church, and so bad things will happen to him. Or that this guy is “holy” because he is visible in church always and that only good things will happen to him. Only God knows that. All things work out for the good of those who love God. It doesn’t mean that only good things will happen, it means ALL THINGS, whether good or bad, WILL WORK OUT for the good of those who love God.

In all Job’s questions to God, God didn’t give him an explanation. Instead, he asked Job a series of questions, “Where were You when I laid the earth’s foundation? Do you give the horse its strength? I control nature. Do you know how?” God didn’t explain to Job, He showed him who He is.

We can cry out our sentiments to God. We can even ask Him why such things happen to us. But before we do, we have to know WHO we are questioning.

So, why do bad things happen to good people? I don’t know and I can’t answer this question. All I know is that God is good, all good things come from him. All bad things DON’T come from God, but that God can take a “bad” thing and USE it and TURN IT AROUND  and make it into something great. All I know is that when something bad happens, that is an opportunity for the glory of God to be made known.

What to do?

What to do….what to do? That’s such a famous question. People wonder what to do on a day to day basis. They wonder what to do with their bills, their children, their jobs, their cars, their mortgages and most importantly they wonder what to do with their life? I mean who hasn’t asked them self, “What do I want to do with MY LIFE?”  And how are we supposed to know exactly what we want to do with our life? The human mind is constantly changing so how are we to know what we would like to do with our life, when one day we may want to do a desk job and the next we may want to do an extreme job! So how does one decide what to do with their life? If you think you have the answer to this mind boggling situation please leave me a comment with your answer!

THE WORLD’S GREATEST BOSS

You came out here just hoping

To try and set us straight

We’ve proven to you without a doubt

That it was much too late.

You tried real hard to help us

You gave the job your all

But all you got from Denver

Was a lonely empty mall.

With your fifty cups of coffee

And your greasy fingerprints

We’re always cleaning glass

And passing you the mints.

Your anal retentive ways

Are borderline OCD.

You’d think you’d wash your hands

And learn to brush your teeth!

You shoot those rubber bands

At employees of Whitehall

You do it all in fun

Just To keep them on the ball.

You think that you’re the “Heff”

With all that graying hair

But the only “Playmate” that you’ve got

Is a ragged teddy bear.

The world’s greatest boss

Is what you really are

We’ll miss you every day

As we think of you afar.

As you look down at your watch

On that last and final day

This time we HOPE that taxi cab

Will take you on your way.

How to Write a Great Cover Letter

It’s so easy to blow it from the get-go. Here’s how: Open the letter with “Dear Sir or Madam.” Isn’t that great? You just told your potential employer that you’re too lazy to look for a hiring manager’s name. How about this approach instead: Do some due diligence. Find out some names, find out or guess the company’s e-mail address naming convention, and then, most importantly, find out what the company’s problems are. Then, in the cover letter, drop some hints to Mr. Sir or Ms. Madam about how you’re going to fix those problems. For these and other tips on cover letters, check out the article I wrote for TheLadders.

Weekend Update 11.22.09

The Job: Employment, sweet employment! Ruby Tuesday hired me (YAY!), though not to fold napkins while I watch TV in the back. I’ll be serving and hosting up to six shifts a week, keeping busy and making money.  Tomorrow I start my internship too — social media marketing at a Baltimore firm. It’s the perfect field, and I don’t even have to be there until 10 in the morning. Hello dream job, I can haz paycheck?

The Gym: You know it’s good. I’ll stop talking about it incessantly :)

The Living Situation: I could complain about the lack of heat in our house, or the fact that our family dog could care less about me, but let’s focus on the positive — Christmas decorations! I know it’s early, but Christmas makes me happy, and I do what I want! So I broke out the Christmas music mix and Christmas-flavored candles while I hung up lights around my bed and fluffed my pink & silver mini-trees. My room is a happy place now.

The Social Life: Last night I got some much needed girl time with one of my best friends, G.  It sounds ridiculous, but sometimes I forget that she’s so close to me — she’s hardly a mile down the road, but we’re both busy chicas. A night of movies, mixed drinks, and stories always feels good though, and it reminds me that it needs to happen more often. Get ready for stories once we hit up the local high school reunion bar.

Song of the week: More Travis Barker — this time, The Transplants.  You know their one song “Diamonds and Guns” from the Garnier Fructis commercials.  It’s awesome, high-energy punk, amazing for workouts, and perfect inspiration for drum lessons that start tomorrow! EEP! :D

Show of the week: Still obsessed with Dexter! Dad and I just finished season one tonight — I never saw the end coming, but it was perfect.  Although, for the record, never watch movies or TV with my dad.  He’s got this uncanny ability to jokingly throw out spoilers five minutes in, and they come true! Thank goodness when he predicted the secret of the Ice Truck Killer episodes ago, I had forgotten by tonight.  I’m SO ready for season two!

That’s it for me — let me know what you’re up to, and have a good week!

Tag 41

Ich hätte hier in Münster jeden Job gemacht (fast jeden), hauptsache erstmal hier her.

Devastating!

credit to Supershin ^-^
that’s how i react today.

my twitter have been hacked yesterday! can you believe it? I send p*rn link to every followers of mine n it’s SHIT~!
damn.
DAAAAAAAAAAAMN~!!!

else, I haven’t got any call to do interview for new job. why oh why T________T
I’m so desperate to get one. but why do not a single opportunity come to me?

shit.

oh no~….

rly devastating.

Introducing BF

Ok, ok, so I’m not really introducing him, as he’s been a fixture in several posts already. But I thought I’d share a tale on how I met the one person that would change my life, and my view on personal finance, for the better.

I’ll never forget the day I met BF. July 13th, 2006. He probably doesn’t remember that date, but I do. We were both participating in a well-known summer medical program at a well-known university in the Northeast. We had already been there for three weeks and had two separate interactions, none of which were favorable, but as they say, the third time’s a charm.

We ended up introducing ourselves and I found out that we lived about 15 minutes from each other. I actually had family that lived in his apartment building so I knew exactly where he lived. He was kind of familiar with the area in which I lived because he worked in the neighborhood next to mine. For the duration of lunch, we were in our own world just chatting it up about whatever, when he finally smiled. And the words “You have a really pretty smile” just leaped out of my mouth. Please note that I am denying that I ever said those words. What I’m saying is that my brain temporarily lost control of my mouth and luckily something coherent slipped out. To this day, I am eternally grateful to my brain for that one moment.

We’ve now been together for over 3 years. And in all those years, I can say, that Money has never been an issue for us. That isn’t to say that we are BALLING OUT OF CONTROL, or anything like that. We just both had similar views on the value of Money and what our financial goals were. I can singularly attribute this to our similar upbringing. We both came from first generation households (parents emigrated to the US, the children are US citizens). We watched as both of our parents struggled with making ends meet but still providing us with the bare necessities and more. Both of our parents also encouraged us to start working at a very young age, so we both learned how to manage money early on. Because of that, we were both financially independent to a certain extent at those ages as we began to not rely on our parents for necessities. So we pretty much see eye-to-eye on how to handle money.

From watching our parents, we both knew that we one day wanted to be wealthy. Not just rich for two seconds, but the hard-working, blood-sweat-and-tears, I-finally-made-it-type-of-wealthy. Our adventure with Money truly began when we discussed how we would embark on that goal. First off, we are becoming master savers. I knew that I never wanted to rent. As he was currently renting, he understood that if we were going to live together, we would have to buy some property. With where we want to live we’re going to need to save a pretty penny to make that happen (about 60K between the two of us). I’m not phased since I live at home and save anyway. When he graduates in June, he’ll also move back home and he’ll be saving a lot too.

We also started to learn about the stock market together. Good thing we were both punks until March 2009 and got in pretty close to the market bottom. Our portfolios look nothing alike, but we trade strategies and bounce ideas off of each other in order to make good decisions about our positions. Lastly, I’ve talked his ear off about Retirement Funds. I have and love my Roth IRA. Wish I could also have had a 401K but my company is not trying to hear that right now, so I’ll just have fun with my Roth until then. I can’t wait for him to be set up with a 401K and a Roth once he starts working. Oh don’t worry, he knows that I will be ALL OVER that once he gets that first check.

So that’s BF in a personal finance nutshell. Aside from this post, he also getting a category! Now, he can’t say that I don’t love him. Because what’s love if it isn’t a post on your PF blog combined with your own Category?

Modern Work Culture

THE ANT

A FABLE… OR MAY BE NOT…

Every day, a small ant arrives  at work very early and starts work immediately.

She produces  a lot and she was happy.

The Chief, a lion,

was surprised  to see that the ant was working without supervision.

He thought if the ant can produce so  much without supervision, wouldn’t she produce even more if she had a supervisor!

So he recruited a cockroach

who had extensive experience as supervisor and who was  famous for writing  excellent reports.

The cockroach’s first decision was to set up a  clocking in attendance system.

He also needed a secretary to help him write and type his reports and …

… he  recruited a spider, who managed the archives and monitored all phone calls.

The lion was delighted with the cockroach’s reports

and asked him to produce graphs  to describe production rates and to analyse  trends, so that he could use them for presentations at

Board‘s meetings.

So the cockroach had to buy a new computer and a  laser printer and  …

… recruited a fly

to manage the IT department.

The ant, who had once been so productive and relaxed, hated this new plethora of paperwork  and meetings which used up most of her time…!

The lion came to the conclusion that it was high time to nominate a person in charge of the department where the ant worked.

The position was given to the cicada, whose first decision was to buy a carpet and an ergonomic chair for his office.

The new person in charge, the cicada, also needed a computer and a personal assistant ,who he brought from his previous department, to help him prepare a Work and Budget Control Strategic Optimisation Plan…

The Department where the ant works is now a sad place, where nobody laughs anymore  and everybody has become upset…

It was at that time that the cicada convinced the boss , the lion, of the absolute necessity  to start a climatic study of the environment .

Having reviewed  the  charges  for running the ant’s department , the lion  found out that  the production   was much less than  before.

So he recruited the owl , a prestigious and renowned consultant to carry out an  audit and  suggest solutions.

The owl spent three months  in the department and came up with an enormous report , in several volumes,

that concluded :

“ The department is overstaffed …”

Guess who the lion fires first?

The ant , of course,  because she

“showed lack of motivation and had a negative attitude”.

Caut job, urgent

Belle De Jour Finally Revealed

This is Dr. Brooke Magnanti who is a respected specialist in developmental neurotoxicology and cancer epidemiology in a hospital research group in Bristol. She is also the anonymous blogger, “Belle de Jour”, of Diary of a London Call Girl and writer of 3 subsequent books which launched the Showtime show, Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

It started 6 years ago, when in the final stages of her PhD thesis, she ran out of money and turned to prostitution through a London escort agency, charging £300 an hour. Already an experienced science blogger, she began writing about her call-girl experiences in a blog.

Surveys

Couple of months ago 2 friends told me about how they were making some walking around cash by answering surveys in their spare time.  Hmmm, I have some spare time so I asked them to forward me the information. They sent me the links, I joined and one of my friends made some change because I joined under her.  Some survey companies don’t have  affiliate programs.  Affiliate programs are another way to make some money, simply by referring people to the company’s site and having them join.  I will write on this topic another time.

Weeks later, I receive surveys weekly.  They take anywhere from 5-20 minutes each.  Often you will need to answer basic questions about yourself to generate surveys.  Questions asked vary: where do you live, age, gender, ethnicity, work, education, income, rent or own, etc… The more you answer about yourself or household the more surveys you will generate.  The frustrating part is that you may not qualify for some of these surveys but you don’t find out until you are half way in to them.  Also, most of these companies only allow one member per household, it really helps if you are the decision maker of the house or else you may not qualify for the bulk of the surveys.

Payment, some of these companies pay you in sweepstake entries, market points and some monthly via check or Paypal.  Sweepstakes entry is just that, for every successfully completed survey you receive an entry into their sweepstakes.  Market points are points allocated to the given survey, for example, survey A can have 35-60 market points, Survey B 50-75 the amount depends on how well you fit the survey’s target demographic.  1 market point  maybe equivalent to 5 cents and the cash out point is $25.00 or you can use the points to buy items on the survey’s market.  The monthly check is aways best, although some survey companies will have a minimum cash out amount, you can ask for a check or transfer into your Paypal account.

Survey Companies:

PineCone Research http://www.pineconeresearch.com  they may or may not be taking new participants. They pay $3 a survey via Paypal or check.  They also have Sweepstakes. No affiliate/referrals yet.

Global Test Market  http://www.globaltestmarket.com/ they are always taking new participants, market points & sweepstakes, no affiliate/referrals yet.

MySurvey.com https://www.mysurvey.com/index.cfm?action=Main.join&r=6815607 they are always taking new participants, market points & sweepstakes, yes affiliate & referrals. 1,000 MySurvey.com Reward Points have a cash value of $10.00. Member accounts below 1,000 Points have no cash value.

Focus Point Global Survey  http://www.focusgroup.com they are always taking new participants, they pay via check after a $20 has accrued or after 3 months of membership. No affiliate/referral yet.  If you qualify for their surveys they call you to be a part of a focus group and pay up around $100 a session.  The focus groups I’ve been invited too are in Santa Monica.

These are just some of the Survey Companies I’ve tried recently and made some walking around cash, let me know if you’ve tried any others, I will give them a try as well and review them.

Next, I will review Pay Per Click sites. Stay tuned…

Get Creative- Get a Job

As you may have noticed lately- I expect to graduate this year- a year earlier than the typical bachelor degree plan. As exciting as that may seem, it’s rather intimidating. My past experiences with the next-step-in-my-life process were simple. I applied to colleges and I got accepted. I had good grades so not only did I get accepted, but they paid me to go to their school. I was blessed to receive such generous scholarships from Northwood.

But the job search process isn’t as easy as all of the other processes I’ve been though before. I apply and I’m the one begging them to bring me on, not the other way around as it always has been for me….

So I’ve had to get a little bit more creative in my job search. For example, I’ve been following some great blog writers, and I’ve subscribed to their blogs. To find some experts in the marketing industry, I’ve followed them on Twitter… Read their newsletters… and stalked them on LinkedIn (that’s what it’s there for right?). I got their names, and contact information and I learned not to hesitate to send them a message. What do I have to loose?

I pick  out some things that I enjoy, and keep track of them. After some time, I write them an email, complimenting them and sharing some of my work. I explain that I’m about to graduate this year and ask if they have any advice etc. People like to be complimented on their hard work. It softens them up and they want to help you, because you’re devoted. By showing that you have read examples of their past entries and not just their last two or three, you are showing them that you really are interested. An even bigger plus, is if you actually use their advice in a school project or in your internship. Use that as an example and model it in your portfolio, it’s a win win for both of you!

If they’re within my region, I have learned to ask if I can job shadow at their firm or company. It’s like a free interview, with no pressure. You have nothing to loose because they probably don’t have an opening (if they did, it would be an interview not a job shadow) and you get to spend much more time with them and meet the whole team. You have the chance to win them over and ask questions. In the end, you can stay in touch. Email them every now and then. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter. Continue interacting with them and don’t hesitate to check back every now and then. If you come across something that reminded you of your time down there, just shoot them an email, let them know you’re thinking about them and that you appreciated their valuable time you spent with them.

These are my basic tactics to getting in contact with the right people. I’ve learned to put up some armor though, because since they’re not out there to be found for job openings, there are going to be a lot of declines in that area- but you never know what it could do for some day in the future when they do need somebody- and that’s what is important!

How was your day?

There are days when you woke up on the wrong side of the bed. You leave your bed with little motivation and enthusiasm to go about your day that although nothing bad happens, (your day) just lacks that umph.

Other days, you wake up the moment that alarm clock rings and you immediately hop off the bed, sing or dance in the shower and proceed to have a mini-adventure of your own later that day.

I think I just had one of those days where I felt alive and chatty.

I had all reasons to be grouchy because I had to wake up at 5am just to make sure that I finish my work before 7am and have it ready for the boss to go over at 10am.

Plus, I had to rush all the way to Bandar Baru Sg Buloh to meet a class or Fifth formers who published a book, which is now in its second print. I’ll blog more about that some other day.

And then, I had to take the komuter to go back to the office and finish another piece of writing to be submitted before my sub leaves the office and takes the day off tomorrow.

But today, I also have a lot to be thankful for.

I work up at 5am and managed to finish my work within two hours  –  just like how I had planned. Normally, I would set the alarm at 5am and would hit the alarm and go back to sleep.

Then, my husband was free to send me to Bdr Baru Sg Buloh, so I didn’t have to take the train because I was running late anyway. We got to the school without any problems because I could find the school in the GPS and it took us right to it, right on time.

I had a blast talking to the students and some of the teachers who treated me to lunch. And then, one teacher — who was on the way home — was very kind to give me a lift to the komuter station.

I had to wait for only 15 minutes for the train to arrive and had a good chat with a Sixth former who was going back to her boarding school in Seremban. Before I alighted the train at KL Sentral, she actually salam-cium my hand as a sign of respect because earlier I had told her I was older than she thought. She thought I was a college student. Haha! That made my day

I got back to the office just in time to write the piece and still managed to leave the office at 6pm.

And when I got home, my mom-in-law had cooked yummilicious nasi ayam and I had that for dinner.

My day couldn’t be any better, really!

So I wonder what kind of day is in store for me tomorrow? Whatever tomorrow lies for me, I’ll start the day with a prayer and a rock-out session with my Disney princesses Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez.

I love my manufactured pop and rock songs

Recommendations

I have an idea. That idea is to start a recommendation type post that I will try to do every week or so. These will probably consist of Firefox addons, websites, and online services I have found useful. I have yet to come up with a name for this “segment”, but I hope to start it soon.

With nothing much else to do while not having a job the web has been a fun thing to explore and there are some pretty useful things out there to use. Also, Firefox will be my chosen browser at least until Google Chrome has better extension support and more of them. I vow to never use IE ever again as my main portal to the web.

In other news, I do have an interview in the morning for a job at a place I got a “no” from before as an engineer. This time though it is for a electronics assembly position, which I think I will enjoy alot. It puts electronics and hands-on work together, which always a welcome job for me. Hope it all goes well.

Nerves should of hit me by now surely?

So i have this phone interview tomorrow, it’s kind of a big deal, the job i think is perfect for me and i’ve been preparing solidly now for a good 4 hours. Answering competency based phone interview questions online and ones from friends and careers….but i’m not even the slightest bit worried.

I’m almost worried I’m not worried which makes no sense…..I’ve no problems with answer the phone to a semi-strange person who’s going to document my life story I’ve done that before but this time it matters, my first real job is at steak and its just not bothering me….weird.

I await your call Josie!

Words Matter

By: Faith Nsubuga, BP360 Intern

Not getting any calls back from your resume? One simple thing that you can do in order to get it noticed is to update the key words. Companies utilize technology to sift through hundreds of resumes per month. They can type in specific “buzz words” in their computer in order to eliminate candidates that do not fit the qualifications that they are looking for. If your resume has key phrases that are essential to that field, then your chances of being noticed are much greater. These key words can be found in the job posting or on the company website. Job postings usually list the type of characteristics that an employer is looking for. They range from “team player” to great “communication skills.”  Using these buzz words that are already provided will help show the employer that you could be a great fit for the company. Make sure to be honest in listing the traits or skills that you have so that you can provide valid examples in the interview.

Another great tool to find key words is to do an internet search for terms that are well known in your field of interest and include those on your resume. You can also utilize a recruiter, who specializes in job placement as they can help you update your resume in order to reflect what the company is looking for. Words matter, so make sure to update your information and re-submit your resume so it will be noticed.

Happy Job Hunting!

How $2.00 Can Save Your Job-Search

The call that you’ve been hoping for comes in - the opportunity a lifetime. A perfect fit, a big-time raise, the company is in your neighborhood, and the recruiter who is on the line is a personal friend of the hiring manager.

After passing through the recruiting firm’s screening process with ease the next step is moving forward and having the recruiter send in your information to his client. He tells you that he would be shocked if you don’t get at least an initial interview.

Up until this point in your search for a new opportunity you have kept no records and have no idea where your résumé has gone, who has seen it, and what has been done with it (get ready for the ’something bad is going to happen’ music).

The next day the recruiter calls back and drops a bomb on you – about two months ago another recruiting firm submitted you there for a different position and their policy is that if two recruiters submit you within a six month time frame you are out – no exceptions.

Tough luck, don’t pass go, don’t collect $200.

One of the most important investments you can make in your job-search is a notebook where you document everything you do. The better organized and documented your search the likelier you are to be succesful.

  • Track your résumé / application submissions. Outside of the example above there are numerous reasons that you should track where you send your information -
    • So that you don’t appear desperate by sending your résumé to the same company over and over(read our previous post on this topic here)
    • So that don’t get blacklisted. I have heard of at least two companies that have started policies that state that if they receive your résumé more than X number of times in X number of months you are not to be considered for X amount of time.
      .
  • Track who you are networking with and what the outcome was. I receive a fair number of calls from people wanting referrals for their search and there is nothing more frustrating than giving them a name and number and then having them call back two days later and say they did not write it down.
    .
  • Track relevant information that you receive.  All information that you receive that can further your search (websites, information collected, tips and tricks, etc) should be documented so that you can refer to it later.
    .
  • Keep an ongoing list of your top potential employers. As a job-seekers you should always have an ongoing list of companies that you would like to work for that would be dumb not to hire you. This list gives you a goal to work towards, gives you a target for networking, and gives you an idea of how to spend your time.
    .
  • Document all of your interview prep and post-interview notes. Having this in one place can not only help you in following up and keeping track of your progress for that opportunity, it can help you in getting ready for future interviews.
    .
  • Keep up with your job-search to-do list and top priorities. As with every other project you take on, your search will have things that need to get done ASAP and will have other things that need to get done in a timely manner. If you are not documenting these things and checking them off they will probably not get done.

If you are not tracking and keeping up with your search it can have dire consequences (getting discounted as a candidate, making you look back, etc) but it can be devastating for your next search (having to start all over again). The $2.00 you spend (or don’t spend) on a notebook can be the difference between success and failure.

Until next time, good hunting and good luck!

U.S. Job Report

The Labor Department reported today that the U.S. unemployment rate climbed to 10.2% in October, topping the 10% mark for the first time in 26 years.

Nonfarm payrolls dropped by 190,000 in October, bringing to total number of jobs lost in the recession to 7.3 million. It was the 22nd straight decline in payrolls. Large losses were seen in manufacturing, construction and retail. Health care and temporary-help agencies added jobs.

The report was worse than expected. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch were forecasting a rise in the unemployment rate to 10%, with 150,000 lost payroll jobs.

The unemployment rate of 10.2% was the highest since April 1983.

Unemployment rose by 558,000 to 15.7 million, the government said. Of those, 5.6 million had been out of work longer than six months, representing a record 35.6% of the unemployed.

"And whatever His soul desires, that He does..." (or) My laundry Detergent is infinite?

You know what? I'm nearly convinced that my laundry detergent bottle, is a cousin to that jar of oil Elijah's friend, the widow had. I don't know how long I've had it, but it's amazed me how many times I've gone to it, and been like, "this is probably the last time..." I even went and bought a new one, thinking the old one would be running out any day now, but the old one still pours forth… the molasses-like liquid.
I… am blessed. =) God’s word is (slightly) more important than laundry detergent, and His power actually never runs out. Mine’s not Asian. I wish it were. That’d be kinda cool.

More than necessary food, he says…

“12 I have treasured the words of His mouth
More than my necessary food.

13 “But He is unique, and who can make Him change?
And whatever His soul desires, that He does.

14 For He performs what is appointed for me,
And many such things are with Him.

15 Therefore I am terrified at His presence;
When I consider this, I am afraid of Him.” (From Job 23)

Es wird getan.

On Monday Morning, I did it. After spending the latter part of last week running all over campus to procure the necessary forms and transcripts and spending part of Saturday working on my resume, I submitted the application internship that I have been mentioning often on Facebook and Twitter quite a bit over the course of the past couple of weeks.

I have to admit that I’m still nervous and excited though. The internship is with the same Governmental Agency I worked with last summer. The only difference is that instead of complaining about the traffic in and around D.C., I’ll be blogging and working live and direct from Germany for eight weeks. I don’t think that I’m nervous about having the job, I think I’m nervous about the fact that the internship is in Europe. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always wanted to travel and If selected, I’ll use the opportunity to my advantage. I’m still nervous about travelling away from my family and friends for that long period of time. The summer before last when I went to Atlanta for three months, I felt the same way I felt now. As soon as I got there, everything was cool and I actually didn’t want to come back to Baltimore when it was time to.

Who am I kidding. I already know that I have it in the bag.

Semi-Random Thought of the Moment: Es wird getan is the German translation of ‘It is done’.

Life of a Photographer

I got back from class today before heading over to the office to find that a bunch of pictures had fallen off my shelf and spilled all over my desk. I thought it was kind of cool so I made things wrose by throwing more pictures on it, then digging out everything so the pictures were on the bottom, like a desktop.

Life of a Photographer

There’s no real point to it, I just thought it was kind of fun and a bright spot to an otherwise crappy day. I used the aperture setting on my camera with an ISO setting of 100 and an automatically set shutter speed of 2 seconds. I had my 350D set on top of a tripod.

uni brennt salzburg - another interview

a few days ago, i spoke with tina and now i got it ready finally. (it’s not bad to do an interview, it’s not bad to translate or type it. the worst thing about it, is listening to the interview about 20 times to understand it fully and write it down per hand.)

so, let’s get started:

lahja: now i’m talking with a very ,very old friend and former school collegue, tina.
tina, you are sick what do you think about the university protests? you can’t be there live at the moment, but what do you think about it in general? what would you do, if you could (go outside, etc.)?

tina: yeah, i notice this via live-streams and with help of videos in internet, which are online and on the one hand i think it is very infantile, like p.e. someone shouted at gabi burgstaller (governor of salzburg) and the rector with a megaphone during a speech at audimax.
students were booing and running to the podium with a megaphone and then shouted and making a tumult and the one girl in front of the rector and burgstaller, who shouted at the two – or i think they were even three – this is in my view not necessary. perhaps this was a bit overreacted, but it seems there is sadly no other way.
because i read our demands, and they exist since ages, but if you don’t demonstrate or doing marches, there seems to be no changes. so, it is infantile, it is maybe overreacted but sadly it’s necessary.

lahja: so, would you say, that the austrian politicians are like a kindergarden? because they are only reacting on infantile actions, really tough instruments and signs of public?

tina: yes, sadly. but you can see, there is no other way. but about the demands themselves: some of them are utopic – i think – and the thing with tution fee.
when i started studying, the tution fee was etablished and now it’s gone and i think until i’m finished this changes about another three times, but i’m sure there will come a new tution fee. at least with next change of regime.

lahja: and when we are talking about government, state and politics, how did you think about the handling of the whole situation by minister of science hahn?

tina: i have to confess, i didn’t go after this.

lahja: okay. in my view he somehow helped us with our protests, because he said the occupation of audimax vienna is only a local problem. of course the people were annoyed about this, because principally these tiny words worked like dropping a stone into water.

tina: well, probably with this statement the whole thing expanded and now it’s a national problem. (laughing)

lahja: and what are you doing at weekend, when you’re feeling better? are you having a look at university or are you going to cure yourself better. because you’ve been quite affected by your disease?

tina: so, i have to work beside university and i’m going to save my energy for this.

lahja: so we have a perfect exemple, that students are not only studying, do nothing or hanging around in front of the tv, but also that students are going to work, although they are studying. why do you have a job?

tina: well, because you simply have more money for living and i don’t want to be dependent on my parent. not even during my studies for 100%.

lahja: thank you, dear tina, for this nice interview.

tina: you are welcome.

so, as you can see, students are working. korbi, my former interview partner, as well. and me too.
we need the money, we want money and we don’t want to be dependent on our parents.
yesterday i had to decide university or working. i decided to do the job. because in this world there is not so much space for idalism, only for money. and that’s a bitter fact.
i’m not fully against capitalism, because it would work great, if there wouldn’t be sooo many people, who are unbelieveable greedy.

at university are some students or non-students, who want to use this protest to stop the whole capitalism-system. i’m not at their side. i only want the governament to spend more money for the universities, i’m against the whole bologna-system and i want it to be possible that everyone, who wants can study what he/she likes. without having the problem of not understanding the prof or having no place inside the audition room.
that’s what i’m for. and this is my reason to support “uni brennt”

Searching Out Gold

In terms of the job-search and recruiting processes there is no greater treasure than finding a good candidate or a good recruiter – both can have a positive effect on a search.

There seems to be some level of confusion amongst both sides as to where to put themselves to be searchable online by the other which is why in our recent survey of (again) 633 job-seekers, 553 recruiters (264 corporate, 215 contingent, 72 retained) and 119 career coaches / counselors we asked how often recruiters and job-seekers use a wide variety of online tools to search out the other.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

1) On graphs below - the higher the bar, the more frequently used the tool

2) It is a good idea to have a general understanding of how the different types of recruiters work – click here for an overview

The first graphic below shows a wide variety of tools that many job-seekers and recruiters use to search the other side out. I think it is important to notice here that job-board databases are used nearly as much by both sides as corporate websites/internal databases.

Below you will find how often both sides use social networking tools to find the other for hiring/search purposes.

No surprise that LinkedIn was number one and that both groups and answers rank highly but it was a little surprising to see Facebook ranked so high and that MySpace still has any audience for professional purposes.

If you were to look at the two charts side by side you would find that LinkedIn and LinkedIn Groups rank up there with job-board sites, internal databases, and corporate career sites, and that Facebook ranks up there with Google/Yahoo and the other databases from the first chart.

A few take aways are important here:

  1. Recruiters are using job-board databases so all of you job-seekers who refuse to post your résumé on the job-boards take note and read our previous post on the topic here.

  2. Both recruiters and job-seekers need to realise the importance of the social networking tools to find the other (including Facebook and Twitter).

  3. Recruiters are using search engines to find candidates who own and maintain their own website. If you have not invested in that yet it is worth your time.

  4. Many college and community career centers and outplacement providers have databases of both job-seekers and recruiters – be a part of them and utilize them.
